Description:
My work is influenced by my formative years at my parents’ clothing factory. I draw on idiosyncrasies from my place of origin, Colombia, which hold notions of home, cultural identity, and belonging. My themes address cross-cultural parallels and contrasts, symbolizing “the other.” “The other” refers to gender, age, race, and religion among other social constructs, that are not equal to me/you/us. I create my own language combining skills I learned in my former career as a fashion designer (Sewing, draping, etc.) and art techniques such as painting, mold making, and fiber art. Conceptually, my work is bold and intuitive yet soft and feminine aesthetically. Process and materiality are essential to my work. As a maker, I create unusual textures and surfaces with subdued colors and contrasting accents. My mission is to bring a strong aesthetic with meaningful and powerful woman’s art to the world; to portrait a real image of the female migrant experience and overall experience of our age.
Conceptually, my work is bold and intuitive yet soft and feminine aesthetically.
