Robert Wilson

Artist
East Wenatchee
United States
Robert Wilson's art is elegant and sensual with an economy of form that gives his pieces a minimalist quality. He regards his paintings as objects. Energy comes from the static tension between the shapes and the tension between the shapes and the edges of the picture plane. Wilson avoids illusion, keeping the image as flat or objectified as possible.

Bio

Robert Wilson was born in Chicago, Illinois. He spent Saturday's at the Chicago Art Institute on Michigan Avenue drawing many of the images he saw there. He became an admirer of American abstract expressionists. It was there that Wilson first encountered the art of Pacific Northwest artists such as Mark Tobey and Morris Graves. As a young man, when Wilson's artist friends headed to New York City, he went the opposite direction, to Seattle, Washington. In Seattle in the early 1960s Wilson met the artist Mark Tobey (1890-1976) and many other Northwest painters. In those days the Pacific Northwest was a Mecca of artistic vitality and rich in ideas and innovation. The Pacific Northwest had its own language of Northwest color, an iridescent glow surrounding objects and an abundance of opalescent light blending water and land, framed in Native American imagery and Asian aesthetics.
