American culture around food is generally unhealthy and needs to be reevaluated. My paintings explore the junk food that most people purchase from their grocery store, the fast-food companies, and even diet fads. These issues are important because they affect each and every person, whether they live in a food desert (a place where there are only fast-food restaurants) or if they live in a large city with multiple healthy options. Healthy food is expensive, and it is not always made appealing like junk food is marketed. I myself fall into the trap of junk food all too often and struggle with overeating. Many put their frustrations and emotions into their diet because we treat our food as if they are our therapists. Advertisements exploit this and use it like propaganda; to convince Americans of their next greatest chance at happiness. By exposing this ideal shaped around food within my paintings, Americans can begin to rethink their relationship with food.
