Exploration of the diversity and fluidity of identity is a constant journey for me. Our understanding of this concept is changing, as the definitions of gender, race, age, geography, culture, and socioeconomic status are mixed, blurred, inverted, and dismantled. I am interested in participating in the conversation between the dissection of the externally determined identity and the increasing awareness of the internally determined one. Currently, I am compelled to depict individuals I feel connected to for one reason or another; familial, friend, acquaintance, or stranger. Every category or label that has been developed for one's identity is inaccurately static and therefore ineffectively descriptive. We are verbs, not nouns. We move and grow. We are both/and, not either/or. A portrait strips away the labels, leaving only the reckoning between subject and viewer, if only for a few moments.
