As a portrait artist, I am deeply interested in capturing emotions.
Before the pandemic, I got used to building intimacy between myself and my subjects to depict their emotional states. When COVID 19 forced many of us into isolation, I had to rethink the intention behind my drawings and my methods.
For months, the only time I saw another person was during walks. Strangers, instead of friends and family, became the source of my inspiration. On one of my walks, I snapped a photo of a man and a woman wearing masks. The man looks at me with unease, his mask covering his nose and mouth. We are not only strangers to one another, we are also mutual threats.
